Story Behind the Artwork:
Mary Anoints Jesus – Six days before Passover, in the town of Bethany, a woman named Mary made a bold and extravagant display of love for Jesus. As He reclined at the table, she took a jar of pure nard, an expensive and fragrant oil, and poured it over His feet, wiping them with her hair. The entire house was filled with its scent, a symbol of worship, love, and sacrifice.
Some questioned her actions, saying the oil should have been sold and given to the poor. But Jesus defended Mary, saying:
“Leave her alone. It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.” – John 12:7
This anointing foreshadowed Jesus' coming crucifixion, signifying His role as the ultimate sacrifice for humanity’s sins. It was an act of pure devotion, a moment of intimate worship, and a reminder that we are called to give our very best to Christ.
