Story Behind the Artwork:
Jesus the Good Shepard is based on the Parable of the Lost Sheep which describes the enormous joy a Shepard has when he finds his lost sheep. But what Jesus later goes on to say, is that there would be even more rejoicing in heaven for the one sinner who repents than the 99 righteous people who do not need repentance. See below for the full Parable from Luke 15:3-7. 
With this piece I tried to capture the insurmountable joy this Shepard must have felt after finding his lost sheep. It is hard to imagine the amount of joy God must feel for every sinner that repents. This piece is a wonderful reminder that Jesus came to seek the lost, and that no one, even lost in the depth of the wilderness is out of reach of the saving light of Jesus. Jesus is our everlasting Good Shepherd. 
The Parable of the Lost Sheep: “Which of you men, if you had one hundred sheep, and lost one of them, wouldn’t leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one that was lost, until he found it?  When he has found it, he carries it on his shoulders, rejoicing. When he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ I tell you that even so there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance. Luke 15: 3-7
